Ten labs.llc tools, written up as lab reports.

Every sheet here follows the form of a school lab report, because that form will not let a reviewer skip steps. It states an aim, lists the apparatus and the procedure, logs what came back with the time in UTC, and discusses the result against two or three tools elsewhere on the web — including where those tools are better.

Read the ten sheets How we test

Our own tools. LABS builds labs.llc and publishes these notes. Every sheet names at least one real shortcoming.

The register of sheets

Ten sheets, filed 27 September 2026

Ten instruments drawn at random from the labs.llc register. Each was measured on a local copy of the build-537 files, and each sheet ends with a link to try the instrument yourself.

  1. The Conditions page on labs.llc: the headline ‘The physical world, at one glance.’, two paragraphs naming its feeds, and the buttons ‘Read the board’ and ‘How it reads’.

    LN-01Live Intelligence · Earth

    Conditions

    Aim
Do five live feeds on one board say where they come from, and what happens when one fails?
    Result
5 of 5 wires answered; the river figure was 43 minutes old and the tile did not say so.
    Controls
    NWS point forecast · Windy.com
  2. The Space page on labs.llc: the headline ‘The next launch. Counted down properly.’, an introduction to the launch board and the ISS map, and the buttons ‘Open the board’ and ‘Find the station’.

    LN-02Live Intelligence · Earth

    Space

    Aim
Does the countdown run only when a launch time is really known?
    Result
8 of 15 launches would tick and 7 get words — but the words were one step off the library’s ids.
    Controls
    RocketLaunch.Live · Next Spaceflight
  3. The Clockwork page on labs.llc: the headline ‘The time of day. Everywhere at once.’, a live ‘your time’ reading for New York with a Pop out button, and an introduction to the clocks and the observatory.

    LN-03Studio & Tools · Earth

    Clockwork

    Aim
With no data upstream, how accurate is the sun arithmetic?
    Result
4 of 5 New York sun events matched the US Naval Observatory to the minute; sunrise came one minute early.
    Controls
    timeanddate.com · Time.is · USNO
  4. The Root page on labs.llc, titled ROOT: the headline ‘Above every domain sits one file.’, an introduction to the root zone register and its watch, and the buttons ‘Open the register’, ‘The watch’ and ‘Method’.

    LN-04Live Intelligence · Internet

    The Root

    Aim
How fresh is the root register, and does it admit it when it is not?
    Result
Snapshot 30 days behind the live root — and the watch panel said so.
    Controls
IANA Root Zone Database · DNSViz
  5. The Tongues page on labs.llc: the headline ‘Every language. On the record.’, an introduction to the Glottolog register, the buttons ‘Open the register’, ‘Walk a tree’ and ‘Play the daily ten’, and a strap reading ‘8,618 languages · 238 families and 183 isolates’.

    LN-05Live Intelligence · Words

    Tongues

    Aim
What does a whole-register, no-request language index hold — and what does it drop?
    Result
8,618 languages in a 1.09 MB file; Manx shown as extinct without Glottolog’s awakening note.
    Controls
    Glottolog · Ethnologue
  6. The Tuner page on labs.llc: the headline ‘Play a note. Read the cents.’ and an introduction explaining that the audio never leaves the browser and that pitch is found by autocorrelation.

    LN-06Studio & Tools · Sound

    Tuner

    Aim
How accurate is the browser detector on notes built to fool it?
    Result
Within 0.04 cents on synthetic notes, no octave error, and noise refused as ‘unclear’.
    Controls
    GuitarTuna · Peterson iStroboSoft
  7. The File Search page on labs.llc: the headline ‘Your files. Found properly.’, an introduction to the local searcher, and the buttons ‘Open the searcher’ and ‘Read the privacy answer’.

    LN-07Studio & Tools · Utilities

    File Search

    Aim
Does anything leave the machine, and does the hand-written ZIP open?
    Result
No network calls; the page’s own ZIP passed Python’s CRC test with accented names intact.
    Controls
    Everything (voidtools) · Agent Ransack
  8. The Gleason page on labs.llc: the headline ‘Gleason’s flat world, measured against the globe.’ and an introduction to the 1892 map and its two distance measures.

    LN-08Diversions · Earth

    Gleason

    Aim
How far apart are the real globe and Gleason’s paper?
    Result
    New York–London 1.067×; Sydney–Santiago 2.264× longer on the paper.
    Controls
Digital Commonwealth · David Rumsey Map Collection
  9. The Network Labs page on labs.llc: the headline ‘Ask the network. Watch it answer.’, an introduction to its four instruments, and the buttons ‘Probe a target’ and ‘Mint a short link’.

    LN-09Live Intelligence · Internet

    Network Labs

    Aim
Do the probe’s panels measure what their labels say?
    Result
The RDAP chain worked; the ‘round trips’ timed Google’s DNS service, not the target.
    Controls
    Globalping · who.is
  10. The email page of the labs.llc domains desk, headed DomainChaos: the headline ‘Who may send as you. And the records that say so.’, a domain input with an Examine button, and suggested domains to try.

    LN-10Studio & Tools · Internet

    Email security doctor

    Aim
What does it find on a real domain, and what does it prescribe?
    Result
    github.com graded B, 73, with a path to A; the relay’s own JSON said C, 60.
    Controls
    Internet.nl email test · MxToolbox

The form

How a sheet reads

  1. 1

    Aim

What the instrument is, who it is for, and the question the run sets out to answer.

  2. 2

    Method

The apparatus — every source it reads and whether the work happens in your browser or on a relay — then the procedure we followed.

  3. 3

    Result

Two figures, both screenshots of the labs.llc tool, and a run log with the UTC time of every reading.

  4. 4

    Discussion

Named controls from the open web: what each does, where it is better, and where the labs tool goes further — then the sources of error.

  5. 5

    Conclusion

A written finding. No stars and no scores: the sheet says what was measured and stops there.
